Stately Homes and Old Toronto Prestige
Forest Hill North is one of Toronto's most prestigious residential neighbourhoods, a leafy enclave of grand homes and quiet, tree-canopied streets that has been synonymous with wealth and refinement for nearly a century. Located between Eglinton Avenue West and Briar Hill Avenue, west of Avenue Road, the neighbourhood was developed in the 1920s through 1940s as an independent village before being annexed by Toronto in 1967. That history of self-governance left a legacy of well-planned streets, generous lot sizes, and architectural standards that have been maintained through the decades. The homes here are substantial — Georgian, Tudor, and Colonial Revival styles predominate, set well back from the street on manicured grounds. Many have been owned by the same families for generations, while others have been meticulously restored or rebuilt by newer arrivals. Upper Canada College, one of Canada's most prominent independent schools, occupies a sprawling campus that anchors the neighbourhood's eastern edge. The Forest Hill Village shopping area, centred on Spadina Road, offers a curated selection of boutiques, restaurants, and specialty shops. Despite its rarefied character, Forest Hill North is not a gated community. Its streets are public, its parks are welcoming, and its residents include professionals, entrepreneurs, and academics alongside old-money families. The neighbourhood's proximity to the Belt Line Trail, a former rail corridor converted into a popular walking and cycling path, adds a recreational dimension that balances the area's refined residential character.
