Midtown's 'Young and Eligible' — where energy meets transit
Yonge-Eglinton is Toronto's unofficial midtown downtown, a neighbourhood that earned the nickname 'Young and Eligible' thanks to its concentration of young professionals, condominium towers, and a social scene that rivals anything south of Bloor. The intersection of Yonge and Eglinton is a genuine urban centre, with the Yonge Eglinton Centre mall, a cinema, and a dense ring of restaurants, bars, and cafes providing everything from date-night dining to post-work drinks. The Eglinton Crosstown LRT, Toronto's most significant transit expansion in a generation, will add a new east-west rapid transit line with a major station here. Beyond the Yonge Street energy, the neighbourhood's residential streets are remarkably pleasant. Tree-lined blocks of handsome brick houses run east and west, many of them home to families who chose the area for its walkability, excellent schools, and the rare combination of midtown density with residential calm. Eglinton Park provides neighbourhood green space with a hockey arena and tennis courts, and Mount Pleasant Cemetery, one of the most beautiful landscapes in the city, offers a peaceful walking retreat just to the east.
